You think so? [What is he talking about, Rue loves his ridiculous leaf art, of course they'd like his tie-dye attempts. Even if it was hideous they'd likely find something to earnestly praise. Though he can't deny, the practice paid off. The painted fur came out quite beautifully in the end.] I mean, yeah! I'm happy with it. It took like four or five tries to nail it, but the teacher graded it high, so.
[He'll just be over here quietly thrilled about passing what is essentially his first year of school's big exam with flying colours. (Literally, so many colours. A rainbow of colours.)
Queen, true to her cat program, is cautiously aloof at first, but Casey wanted her to be on the friendlier side of things, so it only takes a few moments for her to approach the offered claw to sniff, then experimentally rub her head against. She will allow pets.]
[ There isn't. He... yeah, Lex looks sheepish and then looks back to the wall. What he reaches out towards is...
This one. A nice blue linen. Sturdy enough but bold, bolder than most would care to dye it in the world he knew. Actually, he isn't sure it'd be possible to do it there. ]
- I'll have to come back on those enchantments. But so as to not waste both our times, I like this one, I think.
Mom, I hate to tell you this, but he's going to figure it out eventually if he does the math on inventory and orders. Depending on how you guys handle that. [Peter isn't gonna say anything, just let it be.
Blame Thirteen for making their boy tall. He was perfectly portable before all of this.]
[Rue trills softly down at Queen while she investigates those talons in her own time, waiting for that experimental bump before they start scritching behind her ears.
And then they are beaming up at Casey in the middle of those scratches, and there's no mistaking the look on their face as utter, complete pride.]
My brilliant boy. I'm so proud of you. All of your hard work all year long has paid off. Congratulations, my darling. [And even if it's been a little easy for his level, Rue knows just how much work he's put into it, even when the world was metaphorically falling down around him.]
Your first year of school is done now, yes? You have the summer off?
A beautiful choice, I'm quite in love with the shade of this blue. It's just so perfectly clear, truly stunning! And it will look so lovely on you.
[They'll just pick a little tag off the wall, write Lex's name down on it, and pin it to the fabric tag for later. Not that their memory has ever failed them yet, but better to follow the process in place!]
Is there anything else you might like to look at while you're here? We have some summer hats and other accessories out front.
[She should feel like a princess! Rue glides with her across the show floor of their shop, right over to what the owlbear assumes she may like - more cute dresses in pretty pastels with ribbons and some with delicate lace trim. A whole variety of them in different styles and fabrics and patterns, Rue watching Sayori's face to see just where her big eyes land first.]
Tell me, darling, do any of these appeal to you? I think you would be quite adorable in any of them!
Those sound lovely, and I would be interested in the enchanted things too... but where I'm at Lore wise right now, I think it's best that I only commission the one thing, yeah?
[ He shrugs, and, ]
And it's all the more reason for me to keep coming back.
[Queen does the typical cat thing where she starts rubbing alllll up in Rue's business. Just pretend she has a cat scent to mark.
Casey takes in that expression, the pride and warmth that comes from Mother Approval, and some secret tension bleeds out of his shoulders. Whatever else happens, going forward, he won't ever lose this. The rest will be... just fine. Somehow. Probably.
But he'll always have Rue.]
It's done for now, yeah. Hard to believe it's already been two... semesters? [He thinks that was the word they used.] Hunter's trying out some smaller summer classes. I was thinking of doing that too, but not yet. Gonna take a break first.
[He definitely can't focus on anything now, so. Nevermind.]
[ Sayori follows with less grace, hands held in front of her for want of something to do, and for her shyness born from feeling out of place. She approaches with a timid step when and if given the floor to see the clothes more up close, and indeed, they're beautiful--ribbons, lace, and the pastel colouring. It's exactly what's had her in awe since entering the shop, even before.
And being asked what she thinks...! She places her idle hands against her chest. ]
Thank you! They're so beautiful, all of them! But, um, I was wondering... if it's okay to shop by price? [ Merely asking the question makes her face blush, and her hair falls into a darker shade of pink with her. ] I-I've never shopped for anything this lovely before! And I've been here a month, and, ehehe, I don't know how much the clothes this nice costs...
[ She wants to hide her face in her cheeks, but she keeps from doing so. ]
I only want a dress for hanging out with a friend! Um, he-- actually, he introduced me to you! [ That, at least, brightens her, looking at Rue a little more carefully than she has. ] Lex?
[That's music to their ears and not simply because of the future purchase, but because Rue quite enjoys Lex's company and wouldn't mind the time spent together.]
Next time, then, dear. And if anything comes up where you need something a little special, even if you don't have the Lore on hand, I'll be happy to help you nonetheless. No one should go without something beautiful to wear.
Maybe yes, maybe no. Either way, it is my own fault, I will own up to it!
[And Donnie will hopefully accept a few head kisses in exchange for their bad business sense.]
So many people struggle to save Lore in the beginning and I hardly want them to go without clothing, when there are more much important expenses as they arrive.
[Casey and Rue are all too alike in so many regards - the most obvious is how they wear their emotions right on their sleeves. The owlbear watches the tension bleed out of their son's skinny frame and they know this isn't the only reason why he's come over.
And that's just fine.]
You have worked so hard, Casey. A few weeks off is exactly what you deserve. If you have the free time, you can come spend some mornings in the shop with me and then we'll close up early and spend the rest of the day outside basking in the sunshine. Doesn't that sound like the most perfect summer break?
[Now, that is certainly not the first time Rue's ever heard that before.
But Sayori mentions Lex and Rue's feathery face softens at the recognition.] Oh yes! I know Lex, he's quite the sweet young man. Thoughtful and full of youthful passion! I'm glad you've made such a lovely friend, dearest.
But would you mind if I told you something from my past?
-This may just be my pride talking, but let's save something like that for an emergency.
[ He smirks, because, even as he says it, he senses Rue might be the sort of person to think that the denial of something beautiful is in a sense a lesser emergency. But they've been practical this whole time, so he doesn't think they'll argue the point. He says it as he slides out his spoon ]
Seems to me that event between friends, matters of money ought be settled properly as much as they can. It's devaluing someone's talents otherwise.
You're at least ready for whenever Donnie finds out. [Peter will just stay out of that eventual issue directly.]
You could maybe make a few outfits ahead of time in some general sizes for people to take for free when they first arrive...? Like packaged for them to take but still cool looking? Set those aside or something? [He offers back, trying to find a middle ground to keep Donnie mildly off Rue's back.]
[The brush of a talon is startling, almost as much as it had been back in the hot springs, but Amity doesn't flinch away. A huge owlbear isn't scary, any more than the demons of the Isles. But such a gentle touch of her hair is still very unusual. It gives her pause, but after a moment, that bright smile returns.]
...I... I will, then!
[She turns one more time, indulgent, loving the way it flutters.]
[The reassurance of being able to spend whatever time he wants with Rue (even if he already knew he could, and has in fact been doing it already), to have not just permission but an open invitation, is so wonderful. It sure helps with that weird anxious feeling he's had since Casey Senior's arrival. (What if she hates the truth? What if she doesn't like him anymore? What if it's too weird and awkward and she'd rather he keep away? What if, what if-)
Rue's not a back-up plan by any means. But he still likes having somewhere to turn if sharing the truth goes south for whatever reason (irrational or not) and his heart's broken for a while.]
Wouldn't that be a problem for your work? You must be in such high demand these days.
[And Rue waddles away back towards the register, where they keep all of the accessories hanging to browse through. They pluck up a flower hair pin, in a matching purple, before moving back over to where Amity is admiring her dress.]
