[Rue lifts a paw, wiggling their talons, and poof! The mess disappears in an instant.]

Oh. I keep forgetting you can do that.

[That sure would be a nice skill to learn one day. (Eventually, maybe. Cleaning is good for him.) He clears his throat, then lifts the cinnamon again.]

Umm, maybe just stick to the waffles, then.

[And with a Clean Son, Rue pecks a kiss into Casey's hair and turns to grease up the waffle iron, so their waffles don't stick.]

Would you like to do the honors of pouring the batter in?

Oh, yeah! Might as well learn how. Maybe I'll get a waffle maker too.

[It's just pouring batter into the iron, how hard could it be? (Maybe harder than he thought to control the flow, since the first pour is too little, and the second try gets a big messy smear on one side, overflowing a bit. But he manages!)]

[Well! In that case, maybe within the next day or two, there will be a beautiful new waffle iron sitting in front of Casey and Hunter's apartment door! Just out of the blue! From no one in particular!]

Perfect, my Casey! [Would the Rue of a few years ago be able to call this effort perfect? Not in the slightest! But it's their son and that makes it perfect by default.] Now we just let it sit until it beeps at us to remove the waffle.

Oh, that's way easier than pancakes. [He can say it now, so he must be feeling better already, woo.] I love when stuff tells me they're done. Since we got a timer for the kitchen we hardly ever burn food anymore.

Ah, then you need to come over and see my egg cooker! It's quite the delightful little invention. I simply put an egg inside and it beeps when it's fully hard boiled! I've never seen anything so wonderful! How does it know exactly when the egg is done?! It's a mystery!

You can cook eggs inside the shell?

[He mostly eats them cracked and scrambled! Somehow hasn't had a boiled egg yet? Now he definitely must see it.]

[Casey, how have you existed in this place for two years and not had a hard boiled egg!!!]

You can! It's one of my favorite ways to eat them!

Oh... oh! It can still come off after it's cooked then, okay.

Put a pot of water on the stove top to boil. I'll show you! Surely April won't mind us using a few of their eggs.

[He's eager as ever to try new foods, so quickly he stands and fetches not just the water pot but a trio of eggs from the fridge. One for each of them, should April wake up soon. She'll surely be hungry.]

I'd ask if waffles go good with eggs, but I think eggs kinda go good with everything.

[He does love eggs a lot, now that he knows they exist.]

You have a point there. I find eggs can be enjoyed with anything. Have you tried them over rice? I think that may be my new favorite...

[Rue will let Casey start the boiling water while they gather the Waffle Ingredients to set out on the table. Obviously they need butter and syrup, but also cinnamon sugar and whipped cream and chocolate chips and fruits! These waffles need to be stacked to the ceiling!]

But eggs with any breakfast are just the perfect combination.

Eggs over rice... I made something like that before, but it wasn't just eggs, more like a mix of a bunch of stuff including rice. Some kind of Japanese fried rice mix? It was a dinner food, not breakfast, though. I'll try that some time, too.

[Just eggs over rice sounds good. Hunter'll probably like it, he enjoys eggs too. Maybe if he makes a bunch of delicious things it'll simmer some of the leftover anger over him forgetting his tracker necklace. Side perk of getting to tell Rue their recommendation was a big hit. ...He's making a lot of assumptions, here.]

We should make that together next time. I always love to watch you cook.

[And do anything, really.]

Perhaps we should do an entire month of different egg recipes, just to try all of them.

Really?

[He says that, but should he actually be surprised? Rue's so supportive in just about anything he does. (Anything safe and not outrageously reckless.) Cooking is a pretty fun and harmless thing to encourage.]

I could do a month of eggs. I could eat them every day and not get bored. And there's gotta be at least 30 recipes with them.

[Kiddo has no idea there's hundreds, thousands of egg recipes...]

At least - [Rue chuckles softly to themself, knowing just how many recipes they'll have to sort through to land on only thirty.]

But I think it's a marvelous idea! And perhaps after that, we can pick a different ingredient and expand our mastery of it too. A month of eggs, then perhaps a week of potatoes or a fortnight of salads! [if casey will allow salads, that is]

[He makes a face at the very mention.]

Can they at least be like, fruit or veggie salad, or only use lettuce for the base...?

[It is the smallest of concessions, but lettuce is nice and crunchy and doesn't look like leaves. He still won't eat leaves!]

Mm, I suppose we could get creative with using the world salad. Fruit salad, for one, is quite delicious! As is potato salad. Maybe we shall even make a candy salad, how does that sound?

[Casey's eyes widen at that, growing bright instantly.]

There's candy salad?

[Between this and the fruit he's being WON OVER by SALAD oh no, his hard limit, challenged.]

I've only ever heard whispers of it, but even if we can't find an official recipe, who is to say we don't make it ourselves!

We totally have to try it. If we can't find one, we can make one up...!

[The wheels are spinning in his head, now. And since the water's boiling, he'll go ahead and drop those eggs in.]

Set the timer for ten minutes! They'll be so perfectly cooked by then.
