"Hmmm, I've always preferred a looser style due to the way I fight. There is a lot of jumping and flipping about in the fights I get into." The way Maul had always fought focused a lot on martial arts and acrobatics, so it wouldn't do to have anything that he couldn't move smoothly around in.
Maul glanced at the pants which had been pulled out. They definitely weren't his usual style but that was the whole point of this excursion, wasn't it? It was time to get out of his comfort zone. "Not much. There was this suit I wore once. It was black but there was a lot of touches of gold that had been sewn into it. I rather liked that."
[Let's be honest. When it comes to their children, Rue wears everything on their sleeve. Nothing is hidden.
It's all about what Rue expected to hear and there's maybe just the slightest touch of warmth that blossoms in their chest knowing that so many of the conversations they've had with Casey, they've spoken similar sentiments. What he's had to deal with would be incredibly heavy for anyone, but for a child to bear the weight of it? It is horrific and sad and something that will take time to recover from. Not months, but years to heal and even then, most of those scars won't just disappear completely.
But Casey is also the strongest person they know. If anyone can come out of this healthy and happy, it's him.]
He's resilient. [Their paw rests there at Caduceus's forearm, a touch of quiet thanks for all of the work he's done in talking to their child.]
There is no doubt in my heart that he will overcome this and manage to live a life of overwhelming joy, but I know it will be a long recovery, with many ups and downs.
[a quiet beat before Rue adds,] I will not bully you into telling me all of it, but is there anything that I've done, or rather, that I have not done, that I could be doing better for him? How best can I continue to support him?
โฆHmmm. [A very good and sensible question for a mother to ask.] Having not observed you two together much, it's hard to say. But it's clear he trusts you a great deal. That's what is coaxing him to open up to me, despite not knowing me well yet. [He'd promised to try, for them.] The main task I'd give you is the easiest, as I have no doubt you're already doing so: love him, and don't betray that trust.
[He sits back a bit, sipping at his tea.]
As for something more specific, he's shared some concerns about feeling angry, but not wanting to express it around loved ones. He fears how it might affect their view of him, or that it would upset them. I gave him a journal to track them, and how he feels during and after. If you know someone outside of his normal social circle who could help him find an outlet for that anger until we work through better methods of containing it, I think that would be good for him.
"Black with accents of gold? I could absolutely replicate it, if you'd like. If you just give me an idea of the cut and fit of the suit. But for now -"
And since he hasn't completely recoiled from the sight of them, Rue pushes the breezy pair lightly into his chest, motioning to the fitting rooms behind him. "If you like the style of these, I can make them in any color or pattern."
[a letter sent to his home, written in long, loopy handwriting in bright green ink on thick, floral-smelling paper.]
Fjord,
I do! It is located near Satori Hills in Epiphany, a little boutique on the corner, it's impossible to miss. It's called Hoot Couture.
[hold for applause]
I'm there nearly every day, so feel free to stop in anytime! I do custom creations on top of alterations, so if you need anything customized or find something you like that needs tweaking, I'm more than happy to help. :)
By the way, turn your head to the left. It is a smiley face. Isn't it darling?
Take care of yourself and enjoy the sunshine! Delloso de la Rue
"Yes, I would like that very much," Maul said, remembering how the suit had actually been something he'd enjoyed wearing, as much as Maul enjoyed anything that had to do with fashion.
Maul looked at the pants warily when he was handed them, rather like he thought the fabric was going to come to life and bite him. But he dutifully went to try them on. When he came back out, he was examining the cut of them with thoughtful interest. "This is tolerable." Which from Maul counted for a lot. "Perhaps in a dark orange?"
[ Tony lets himself roll his eyes at their very fake gasp. ]
Thank you. It's been... A long road. [ That actually sounds genuine. But then, Rue was willing to sit through Tony venting about it, so they know more than most. ]
You probably woulda liked the tasting menu at Cutting Edge - you should check it out with your fiancรฉ sometime - but honestly my favorite part was donning these huge parkas and going out in the below freezing cold to watch the auroras. [ He's making it sound like a half-complaint to avoid admitting that it was genuinely really romantic and sweet. ]
While he changes, Rue will just use the time to re-fold a few of the scarves near the front of the shop, though the second he comes out through the curtains, the owlbear is there to coo with delight.
"That fit is perfect! And they feel loose enough for your work, not too constricting anywhere, yes?" Let them just circle the man for a moment, giving him a quick up and down. "Dark orange would be lovely. Do you like the fabric on those? It's quite sleek."
[Love him. Trust that Rue will never let a single moment go by where Casey doesn't know exactly how much he is loved by them. That is one promise that the owlbear never fears they will break.
The mention of anger though, that is a different beast entirely.
Rue listens to the advice that Caduceus offers, their gaze dipping down to their tea cup to watch the water swirl, a little too focused on the pattern it makes. Anger is something that Rue has been struggling with themself, just as privately as Casey must be, likely with just as much fear of it as he's been feeling too.
They can't quite meet their friend's gaze as they finally answer, big eyes still glued to their tea.]
But Rue just looks overjoyed at the news of the man's perfect date. The fact he has managed to find love in this world, especially with someone he has such a long, somewhat messy history with means everything. Love still conquers all.]
Sometimes the longest roads lead to the most unexpected of places. Congratulations, my friend. To you and Steve both, though I will tell you that I'm especially fond of him, so don't you dare break his sweet heart!
"Yes, this is just the sort of thing I would be wearing while fighting." Maul tended to go for tops that were a little bit tighter on top and tended to show off quite a bit of skin but for his pants he preferred them to be loose given how his fighting style revolved quite a bit around the kicks he performed.
He nodded at the mention of fabric. "This will work. Perhaps some designs at the bottom reminiscent of my tattoos?" He gestured to the black tattoos on his face. They were symmetrical and done with care, though there was a certain wildness and tribal aspect to them as well.
At the mention of his tattoos, the owlbear sweeps to meet him face-to-face, so they can get a better peek at those tattoos of his. Without warning, there's a shimmer of glitter floating mid-air behind Rue's shoulder before a golden parchment and quill poof into existence. Immediately, the quill begins scribbling at the paper, taking notes of the man's preferences before it sketches out exactly how the tattoos might be placed on the pants, all the while the owlbear themself is nodding eagerly.
"Absolutely! In black against the orange? I think that would be very fierce."
