[Peter just settles back against Rue, actively relaxing a little more.]

I will challenge you, because Casey and I are going to make another batch soon enough.

Then you had best prepare to be beat, my darling one. My sons will eat out every potato in Folkmore, take my word on this!

Am I not included in on the potato eating because I'm the one making them? [It's a half tease on his part.] Do you think we'll be kicked out if we make a potato shortage in this place?

I said my sons, did I not? Of course you are included!

[too soon??? rue really hopes not!]

Mmm, we might. Especially if they catch on to how delicious your latkes are.

So, I'm making the food and eating it, I guess it pays off. [It isn't a rebuff of the idea at least.]

We'll see if anyone else outside our little- family even notices. [Its a tentative use of family. Peter wonders if that's too much.] Latkes are a little niche I think.

[Peter may take a more tentative, careful approach, but when the word family slips from his mouth, Rue beams.]

You have such a talent for cooking and baking.

Thank you, talent- [He seems to re-think that sentence.] I dunno about talent, yet. I'm getting there, right?

[He's trying to not be as down on himself. Given his freak out on Rue. He doesn't want to worry the Owlbear anymore.]

[Here comes Rue plucking out another latke.]

How is this not a talent? Creating delicious food to share with everyone is a wondrous talent, darling.

I guess it is? I mean, I'm- just cooking? I like doing that. [He shrugs a little back, even if he does smile at Rue going in for another latke.]

[as long as he keeps smiling, rue will eat this entire container.]

Did I ever tell you about my first experience cooking?

No, I don't think you have. What happened? [Unsurprisingly, he's naturally pretty curious.]

It was one of my first nights back at ADI. Tim had purchased these microwavable cups of noodles that he seemed quite excited by. I barely remember who was at fault, but I can only say that within mere moments, our microwave exploded into terrible flames! At the time, it was very terrifying!

[Just the thought brings a soft laugh out of the owlbear, affection curling in their chest.]

But we did laugh about it later once I was significantly less traumatized.

[The thought of Rue accidentally setting a microwave ablaze startles a laugh out of Peter. He shakes a little in Rue's grasp with mirth.]

Oh my god- yeah, I can see how that would be scary for a first time. You were still figuring out tech too.

[He feels in passing a little bad for laughing, so he shifts to just sit up and press a kiss against Rue's cheek. An old habit ingrained from May.]

I hardly knew appliances could catch flame like that! It was terrifying!

[But they are absolutely laughing, pressing close enough to bump their shoulder affectionately to Peter's.]

So coming from someone still learning, I think if you have not yet set a microwave ablaze, you are already far ahead of me!

[Peter huffs a little, still smiling up at Rue.] When I first started, I definitely set a few things on fire. It's kinda a process.

[Peter's tone is fond, even with the cringe that comes to the surface.] I mean, if it helps, you haven't seen May's cooking. [He lets his hands drop to his knees as he wrinkles his nose.]

There was this one time she made a cake, and like... oh my god. It was... fleshy? Like, you could hit it and it bounced back?

[It was Thicc, Rue.]

[....]

Fleshy?

[spirits, that beats flaming microwave on every level]

Even as new as I am, I have yet to make anything, ah, fleshy. You did not eat it, did you?

Fleshy. Like... the texture was not good. [Peter maybe did eat it and had regrets, but he's side stepping that.]

It was way too many eggs. Don't add that many eggs.

[Rue notices he did not answer and they are silently JUDGING.]

I will keep that in mind. Using too many eggs is to be avoided. At least I have not created any monstrosities while cooking, only the occasional fire.

[Not the first time he has been judged, nor the last.]

The recipes usually give you the right amount of eggs. May did a full twelve for some reason? [The texture was mysterious thanks to those eggs.]

Fire is kind of more... normal? Not good, but normal. Ned and I like ruined a microwave once at a sleepover.

I do not wish to speak ill of your aunt, but I do not think I would ever allow her to use anything in my kitchen.
