[ And so, at around 4:30, Tony shows up at Hoot Couture with a bottle of Chardonnay under one arm and a basket filled with mushrooms clutched in his other hand. He hollers out a: ] Hey! How's my favorite Fae doin'? [ As he closes the door with his foot.
He glances around the store, setting the bottle of wine on a table. Almost couldn't believe it was nearly spring again. Oh how time flies when you're having fun. ]
Much better now that you've brought the Chardonnay!
[But Tony is absolutely getting a quick peck of an owlbear kiss to the cheek before Rue shuffles away to grab their glasses and a small platter of snacks arranged artfully by their husband.]
Don't get me wrong, I love what I do and I need to keep busy, but a few drinks with a friend are exactly what I need after a long day on my feet.
[ Tony laughs, gives Rue the Italian auntie kiss on the cheek right back before they shuffle off for the snacks.
Outside the shop, a few varieties of mushrooms crop up on the lawn as Tony thinks to himself how nice it's been to have actual friends. Sure, he might miss the handful he had at home, but without his vast array of resources that he had in his own world, it was a lot easier to come by real friends. ]
I hear ya. [ He says grabbing the glasses from Rue and pouring them some wine. ] After being around teenagers all day, it's nice to relax. [ He laughs. ] Though your kids are better behaved than most.
[Does Rue's feathery chest puff up a touch at that in pride? Absolutely. Their kids may be menaces, but they are polite menaces.]
I know exactly what you mean. I do not think I truly realized how deprived I was of adult company until the Steves' holiday party last December. To be in a room full of adults after nothing but teenagers opened my eyes and I know to give myself these wonderful breaks now.
[They'll take their glass with a word of thanks before settling back and getting right to it, like the messy gossip they are.]
Now, enough pleasantries! I have been waiting for weeks!
[ Tony lets himself roll his eyes at their very fake gasp. ]
Thank you. It's been... A long road. [ That actually sounds genuine. But then, Rue was willing to sit through Tony venting about it, so they know more than most. ]
But Rue just looks overjoyed at the news of the man's perfect date. The fact he has managed to find love in this world, especially with someone he has such a long, somewhat messy history with means everything. Love still conquers all.]
Sometimes the longest roads lead to the most unexpected of places. Congratulations, my friend. To you and Steve both, though I will tell you that I'm especially fond of him, so don't you dare break his sweet heart!
[ Tony lets out a hissing laugh through his nose at Rue getting protective. ]
I won't - [ There's a smirk on his face, though, and he continues with a: ] But if you ask me? Turnabout is fair play, Rue. [ But it's obvious it's all a joke, and he means it with the utmost humor. ]
But- No, seriously, thank you. It's... [ So many things, mostly things Tony doesn't really have the words to describe very well. ] Nice.
[ A beat. He clears his throat. ] How was your Valentine's Day, though?
[Tony laughs but Rue just feigns a look of utter offense, barely able to keep their expression straight, too much delight shining in their big eyes.
The honesty from their friend, however, has the owlbear dropping a paw gently at his forearm, just a brief, encouraging touch, soft and supportive.]
You deserve something nice in your life, Tony, and I can think of nothing nicer than Steve Rogers.
As for me, it was lovely! My betrothed planned the entire evening, which was entirely foreign to me and I know he must have seen me struggle to let go at least a dozen times, but when I finally did, I had a wondrous time. We went out on the lake in a darling boat to stargaze.
[ Tony smiles, both at the sentiment - yeah, he does deserve something nice actually, they're right - and at the description of Rue's date. ] Now that's romantic. [ They were about tied on that front, he figures. ] Sounds like we both managed to get something nice.
[ A beat, and Tony smirks, the barest hint of a pearly white fang visible. ] And knowing you? That wedding of yours is gonna be one hell of a party. Can't wait. [ He refills their wine glasses, and raises his own in a toast. ] To romance.
[ Tony chuckles a bit nervously, but takes a sip. ] Yours, certainly, is going to be quite the event. [ He smirks. ] Looking forward to having a Plus One for it that I'm not tryin' ta hide.
Compared to before, I find I have nothing but time anymore. [Who knew raising six teenage boys would be the most low-key job Rue's ever taken?]
But excellent! I won't bully you into the floral suits I picked out for the boys, but I'll take inspiration from them and create something worthy of Tony Stark.

I'll bring a bottle of wine, stop by the shop?

And perfect! I'll be free after four, come anytime and we'll have the whole place to ourselves. I'll provide the snacks.

As you've... Probably guessed at- [ He rubs the back of his neck. Chuckles slightly. ] Steve and I have kinda- We're- [ Clears his throat. ] Together.
Hah. Sorry, this would've been- [ Tony's nervous chuckling bubbles out harder. ] Kinda a PR disaster back home. And I'm still getting used to it.

Steve! [an absolutely fake gasp] I had no idea!
[They obviously did.]
What a handsome couple you both make! Oh Tony, my heart is so warmed to know the two of you have found one another in this place.

You probably woulda liked the tasting menu at Cutting Edge - you should check it out with your fiancΓ© sometime - but honestly my favorite part was donning these huge parkas and going out in the below freezing cold to watch the auroras. [ He's making it sound like a half-complaint to avoid admitting that it was genuinely really romantic and sweet. ]
