★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Delloso de la Rue
Character Age: 1000+
Character Species: Owlbear Fae
Current Health: Alive and uninjured
Outfit: Modern fashion trends look great on owlbears.

Character Canon: Dimension 20: A Court of Fey and Flowers
Link to History: Here!
Canon Point: Post-Canon, after Rue has left the Court of Wonder
Canon Iteration: CRAU from [community profile] apocalypsehowcomm
Canon Iteration Explanation:

"Away from the Bloom, who even is Delloso de la Rue? I've been so long associated with it, I hardly know where I end and it begins."

The majority of Rue’s stay in Apoc was about coming to terms with who they truly are. In canon, Rue gave the whole of their life to their job and that combined with the fact they were never seen without a glamour, meant that they never once got to try living as themself. Living under the guise of something you are not for so long, especially in a role that came with such heavy expectations, Rue spent many months in Apoc struggling with what pieces of themself were really them and what were merely the expectations that had been so unjustly thrust upon them. It is still a journey for them, to discover who they are, but just having the freedom to even explore it has made all the difference

Along those lines, Rue has also been learning to allow themself to be more animalistic than they ever have before. Masquerading as an elf for multiple millennia, Rue had untrained themself from any owlish behavior or sounds, never walking on all fours and never ever stretching their wings in public, no matter how cramped they might be pressed so tight at their side. But in Apoc, with the support of their husband and their other non-human friends, Rue has been able to let go of some of that desperate need for control over themself, to let more natural characteristics peek through. It’s still a struggle, because even this far removed, Rue can’t quite shake the feeling others will think of them as a beast if they act in such a way, but they’re working on it.

Apoc also introduced modern human society and technology to Rue. They absolutely adore texting and trashy reality tv.

They also married their fiancé - Hob - and unofficially adopted a gaggle of teenagers as their own. For the first time in their life, Rue has true family.

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills:
Event planning - Rue spent millennia working as the most prestigious event planner among the fae. Though their biggest event was The Bloom (the fairy world's celebration of a grand swell of magic), they also were in high demand for weddings, engagements, and the like. They were known for their intricate and artistic vision and their ability to bring that vision to life. This is both a skill and a passion of theirs and something that continues to drive Rue forward, even if they no longer run The Bloom.
Clothing Design & Creation - As a hulking owlbear among the slim, delicate fey, Rue always found it very difficult to fit in among their courtiers. Even masquerading as an elf, most furniture was not suitable for their size and and there was really nothing for them in the world of fashion. And being such a passionate fashion forward being, Rue took it up themself to create their own clothing. We see in canon that Rue themself enjoys dressing up and trying new styles, but when disguising as an elf, we really see some of those designs take shape. Previously in Apoc, Rue worked as a tailor for all of the non-humans who needed more customized clothing that human-owned shops would not provide.
Leadership Skills - As an event planner who worked events for entire fairy courts, Rue has the organizational skills, the problem solving skills, the general talent for managing a group of people to help coordinate for their big events. Most of them require entire workforces, just to make sure every piece is perfect.
Etiquette - Rue also has a very practiced experience in etiquette. Coming from a very Austen-esque Period, it was something that has been a part of them their whole life. Being in more modern times in Apoc has not changed much, except that Rue no longer writes novel-length text messages with both a Salutation and a Complimentary Close.
Canon Abilities:
As it always does, D&D comes into play to complicate everything. Luckily in the case of Rue, their magic, though important to what they do, isn’t quite as destructive and game-breaking as some other classes. Rue is a level 9 Bard and as a bard, they cast spells through using music as their magical focus. For Rue, that’s their voice.
↪ Most of Rue's more mundane magical spells can be summarized as minor, cosmetic effects. Much of what they've learned over the years has been in service to their job as an event coordinator, so it's been more about cultivating an experience than about doing anything relating to combat.
↪ For their more powerful spells, Rue's magic is mostly related to inspiring effects in others through their music. Rue can influence allies to perform better at tasks, to have their wounds healed, or to disrupt any mind-influencing effects on their person.
↪ As a fey, Rue also can glamour themself into a very convincing disguise of an elf.
↪ As an owlbear, Rue has some increased strength for their size, but this isn't something Rue would even think to use to their advantage.
Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: Since they already have one pair of wings, Rue will manifest a halo of living flowers above their head.
Role Reasoning: Though Rue has some characteristics that lend them to the other two options - their rather dogmatic nature, for one - at their heart, Rue is courageous, compassionate, and considering the unfair treatment done to them by their former court, kind. Rue is a giver by nature, something that was likely instilled upon them as a cub, but as an adult, it comes to them so naturally. They see others in need of help - Grabalba engaged in a loveless political union, Binx finally wanting to take off her glamour and be her true self, even Chirp and Squak, who Rue challenged into opening themselves up to finding real love - and they simply must dive in to assist. I think Rue's progression would go along the lines of how it has been since end of canon - Rue taking more agency of themself and trying to find that perfect balance between selflessness and self-care. But with such a new heavy title in their paws, Rue may be more inclined to push themselves to the side again, in favor of doing too much for others again.

★ Personality ★

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it? The biggest canon example of this would have to be Rue's meeting with the Chorus, their court's leaders. The Chorus saw that they were losing Rue after they had come out as their true self and then spent the night of the ball dancing publicly with Hob, and knew they had to do something before they lost the owlbear completely. To them, Rue was a symbol of their power over the other fairy courts, considering they had all of the power over the Bloom while Rue was in charge of it. So when Rue came to inquire about rumors they had heard about their court being the deliberate downfall of another, the Chorus came back asking Rue to take a promotion to their ranks instead. Though initially quite taken back by the very prospect, Rue stood their ground and without question, let the Chorus know just where they stood and that they would never join their ranks. They also (in so little words) put in their notice as Master of Ceremonies, letting the Chorus know they would be picking who replaced them, someone from outside of their court, a fact the Chorus raged about.

  • What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. Rue would have a very difficult time explaining the struggle they feel, but they are absolutely aware of their struggle with allowing themself to be less than perfect. Rue lived for thousands of years masquerading as a slender, tiny elf and no one ever saw through their glamour. They absolutely had to squash down their natural owlbear instincts and conform to the human-appearing fey's standards, never once allowing their animal side to peek through. Though they are no longer hiding themself, Rue still can't quite let go of being seen as that beautiful, graceful elf fey. Even completely alone, they do not engage in any more animalistic qualities. They were able to begin a shift into accepting their wild side more in Apoc, but it will be a long process to undo the damage hiding for so long did to them. Even now, as a hulking, seven-foot tall owlbear, Rue is always making themself smaller, taking up the least amount of space as possible, speaking gently and softly and never raising their voice. The best way for them to improve is purely being around other non-humans and seeing the way that they interact with the world (and how the world interacts back with them.) And also maybe a little therapy.

  • If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not? As daunting as it would have been, Rue would have never glamoured themself into fitting in with their court. Certainly easier said than done, but having not just survived but thrived after their initial coming out, it is near impossible for them to not imagine how entirely different their life would be if they'd only been themself the entire time. Rue kept the world at arm's length for thousands of years, unable to fully trust anyone, refusing to allow themself anything more than a gentle brush of their hand. How better adjusted they would be today if they had not had to hide, if they were able to form real relationships and feel the comfort of touch. Would they have been more willing to see the cruelness of their court sooner? So much would have been different.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed? Even now, it truly is getting all wrapped up in the details of planning a big event. It can be stressful and chaotic, but that is where Rue is able to make the most sense out of everything. There will always be colors that go together, will always be a menu option that ends up fitting everyone's preference, there will always be a way bring everything and everyone together so that they all leave with only beautiful memories of that day. It's just where they shine, their true passion, especially now that they are separated from the Bloom, which brought a lot of undue pressure of devoting their entire life to it. Now Rue can plan events simply as a hobby or job, not as their only reason to live.

    k.p. hob
    dimension 20: acofaf

The goblin that Rue never saw coming.

Though they've only known one another for a mere comma in the life of the fey, the connection between them was immediate. K.P. is Rue's beloved bugbear fiancé, former Major of the Goblin Court and the esteemed Hero of Briar Falls. After a millennia of struggle with hiding themself, it was seeing Hob simply be himself at the Bloom - a towering bugbear gentleman among the fey, furry and fanged and clawed but still so respectable - that finally pushed Rue out of hiding. Because quite suddenly, they couldn't look down at their own true form and criticize their features when those were the same exact features they found beautiful in Hob.

The build up to their engagement was a mess of miscommunication and pining and letters that were never received, but even if choosing to break free of their responsibilities to their courts and run away together was a bit of an impulsive decision, nothing has ever made as much sense to Rue as accepting Hob's proposal. So far, their time in Gloucester has been spent learning more about one another and their new surroundings, discovering new hobbies and interests as a couple. Rue has gotten the former Major hooked on the dating reality shows.

Rue's first friend in Gloucester. Though brought together by their similar owl-features, Eda has been a constant in Rue's life since arriving. The woman brings out the owlbear's more spontaneous and silly side, but they've often delved into their sorrows and fears with one another in a way that they normally wouldn't with anyone else.

Eda is, above all, safety and comfort, a trustworthy and caring friend.

Even after a terrible first impression, Carter has quickly risen to become one of Rue's most trusted friends. Since becoming closer, Rue frequently can be found helping out at Carter's medical tent, eager to bask in his gentle wisdom.

Mercy is all of the warmth that Rue's former court had been lacking.

Rue is absolutely enamored with this young woman, so taken with her views and unshakable faith. Maybe the God comparisons are a touch embarrassing, but mostly it feels like an inside joke between them, one that never fails to leave the owlbear laughing happily and teasing their friend right back. It's all too easy to envision a future with Mercy involved, seeing the world together and spreading joy. However things end up after ADI, Rue is warmed to know if they and Hob don't return to Faerie, there are other places they'll be welcomed to with open arms.

Character Name: Delloso de la Rue (they/them)
    Age: 1000+
Canon: Dimension 20: A Court of Fey and Flowers
Canon point: End of the final episode, after Rue has left the Court of Wonder
    History: Wiki Link!
    Personality:
Composed - Molded from childhood, Rue was built from the bottom up to be the perfect representative of the Court of Wonder - effortlessly composed, undeniably gregarious, and wondrously gifted. Because of the demanding nature of running the Bloom and the burden of continuously wearing a glamour, Rue had to become someone who was unflappable in the face of every kind of situation. From their cool interaction with Gwyndolin (R: “There was a moment where a watchful eye would have clocked we made eye contact that lasted a bit too long, wouldn't you say?” G: “It was nice.” R: “Hmm.”) to any dealings with the Lords of the Wing (“Oh, my dears, that means so much coming from you two. I must admit, you have caused me a lot of trouble in the past, but that was to be expected.”) and, of course, the very charged conversation with Hob post boss fight (“Major Hob. That was a battle, wasn't it? We did it. We were successful in our mission. Congratulations. I'm sure you have to report to the Goblin Court and debrief.”) it’s clear that there are very few moments they ever truly lose their calm.

It’s especially telling how in control Rue is of their emotions and self that while we see BINX’s glamour crack multiple times at heightened emotion, Rue’s never once does, even during their run in with Hob during the Hart Hunt.

Dogmatic - One of Rue’s most notable flaws is how when they feel deeply about something, they will stand by their own opinion and fully believe it to be the only truth. There are some ideals they simply refuse point-blank to acknowledge, sweeping away the evidence that doesn’t fit perfectly with their own vision of the bigger picture. The biggest, most obvious example would be Rue breaking off the engagement between Viscountess Grabalba and Prince Apollo. Though the marriage would have been a great boon to the Goblin Court’s lesser standing among the Courts, Rue saw fit to end it without ever once addressing their concerns to Grabalba herself.
Rue: Do you think Apollo loved Grabalba? Do you think Grabalba loved Apollo? Sickening, the things people do for power. The things people do for honor. And for what? Ultimately, for what? I couldn't allow it to happen.
Major Hob: So you admit it.
Rue: Yes, I ended the marriage. It had to be done.
Though most of what they do comes from a place of love, the way that Rue sometimes goes about the things they believe so deeply in is not always correct. This can also be seen in the way they proudly declare to The Chorus that they wish to abolish the idea of Courts altogether or how they struggle to understand why Hob himself struggles so much between duty to his court and duty to himself. Rue sometimes oversteps on the things they are most passionate about, believing that their way is the only way.

Passionate - Though they’ve had to keep so many of their emotions buried for so long, Rue is simply bursting with feeling towards the people and things that mean most to them. They are a hopeless romantic at heart, someone who has been kept from the world for so long, that their mind runs wild once they are finally set free. Some of the best examples would be how immediately after the Hart Hunt with Hob, they pen the most excessive love letter to him, claiming a deep connection and understanding that feels like way too much for one brief afternoon with the man. And then there's their equally heated outburst to the Chorus, fervidly explaining that the Chorus' idea of the Bloom only belonging to them is an affront to the very idea of the event, which Rue has always used in service of cultivating love between courts. And then during their fight with Major Hob over the broken engagement, Rue reveals just why they took that step too far in interfering:

Rue: Understand that everything I have done was for love.
Major Hob: For love of your court? For love of your prince?
    Rue: For love.
Charismatic - As the Master of Ceremonies for the biggest event in Faerie for thousands of years, Rue’s personality is magnetic when they are in their element. They float through conversations with practiced poise and effortless elegance, a personification of the Wondrous Court they hail from. As an emissary for the Bloom, Rue has dealings with every Court in Faerie, and as such, is an expert at using their charm to their advantage, soothing over disputes between Courts and knowing exactly how to work the crowd of mischievous fey to their benefit. When the Lords of the Wing make their over-the-top entrance to the Bloom, Rue is on them immediately with the tempting promise of a wager to keep them behaved for the whole of the event, even inviting along the whole eager audience of the Bloom to participate.

Courageous - Though Rue spent so many years making themselves fit into the perfect box that was expected of them, since taking that first step out into living proudly as themselves, their bravery has only blossomed. It began at the tea party, where after living under a glamour for many millennia, Rue finally revealed their true owlbear form to everyone in attendance at the Bloom. They knew there would be repercussions, that even if no one spoke up to their face, that their reputation would ultimately suffer and they’d be the subject of gossip for the rest of the event, but still, they went through with the scariest thing possible to them and came out from it relieved to have it behind them. From there, facing the world became easier. When the Chorus came calling to ask Rue to join their ranks, Rue flat out refused to hide themselves behind a second mask, and even went so far as to call them out.

Rue: And you have the audacity to tell me that this event should be orchestrated by one of our own, and only by one of our own. That stands against everything I hold important, everything I hold dear.
Chorus: We admire your passion, and we see your purpose here. And we do not fault you for your outburst. It's in your nature. We do not rescind our offer. We think, we think it is better for you to stand with us.
    Rue: Than against us.
    Chorus: We didn't say that.
    Rue: You didn't have to.
Even knowing this confrontation would mean the loss of their home and their title and the only life they've ever known, Rue does not hesitate to refuse them and let them know exactly how they feel about their offer.

Suitability: To be quite frank, Rue has no where else to go. Having left their only home and career of the last millennia, they are now orphaned from the courts and finally free to live their own life. If given the choice to simply wander or to help save the world, they'd most definitely want to side with the ones doing the saving.

Powers/Abilities: As it always does, D&D comes into play to complicate everything. Luckily in the case of Rue, their magic, though important to what they do, isn’t quite as destructive and game-breaking as some other classes. Rue is a level 9 Bard and as a bard, they cast spells through using music as their magical focus. For Rue, that’s their voice. I’ll break down their spells between general mundane magic and magic that inspires effects in others.

    General, more mundane magical effects:
✦ Most of Rue's more mundane magical effects can be summarized as minor, cosmetic effects. They can create a shower of sparkles in the air, they can instantly mend tears in fabrics, they can create spectral servants to carry out very simple tasks, etc. Much of what they've learned over the years has been in service to their job as an event coordinator, so it's been more about cultivating an experience than about doing anything relating to combat.
✦ Locate Creature - By speaking their name, Rue can sense the direction of another creature’s location.
✦ Dimension Door - A teleportation spell that allows Rue to take one other willing creature along with them.
✦ Glamour - As a fey, Rue can cast a glamour on themselves at anytime, though the image they create is only a convincing illusion, not a true transformation. Any touch would reveal the truth about their form underneath.

Magic that inspires effects in others:
✦ As a bard, much of Rue's magic is related to inspiring effects in others through their music. Rue can influence allies to perform better at tasks, to have their wounds healed, or to disrupt any mind-influencing effects on their person.
✦ Command - Rue speaks a one-word command that a creature must follow.
✦ Sending - Rue sends a short message of twenty-five words or less to a creature with which they are familiar.
✦ Polymorph - Rue can transform a creature (unwilling or otherwise) into a new temporary form.

Entity Affinity: Considering Rue's long history of pretending to be someone they are not, the Stranger rings true to them. It's a fear of their own, for certain, but also a fear they can inspire in others. Who is Rue really? They spent so long wearing a mask and being someone else, that there is no telling if even now they are genuine or just continuing to play the role they were molded to play. They can't even be too sure themself.

Inventory: Only the ring they made from Hob's medal of courage and their gorgeous outfit from the theatre.

EYES: Black eyes like a barn owl, that have been described as very kind and expressive.
FEATURES: Rue is an owlbear, so instead of more human-like features, they have the head and long, elegant neck of an owl. Their facial disc is heart-shaped and framed by soft green feathers, and instead of a mouth or snout, they have a skinny beak. Their eyes, described above, are framed by long, thick lashes. Rue's broad shoulders and wings are draped in long feathers, and and their paws are tipped with sharp, but gentle talons. Though usually covered by the flowing, elegant dresses they prefer to wear, their lower half is more similar that of a bear, ending in ursine-like feet with claws.
DRESS: Nothing is more important to Rue than their style of dress. Before they revealed their true form, they preferred to dress in extravagant, over-the-top looks that ran with the theme of the event they were hosting. Now, since they've come out as an owlbear, Rue prefers more comfort and glamour in their dresses. Generally, there is a theme of peonies in their looks, their favorite flower. They love jewelry and headpieces and any piece that really makes a statement, though their claws keep them from accessorizing with equally fashionable shoes. They've also taken to wearing the ring they made of Hob's medal of courage, a secret token of their affection.
VOICE: Generally, Rue speaks very calmly, but with absolute confidence and clarity. With a performance ability of +11, it isn't any surprise that when they want to, they can command the attention of everyone around them.

Thought I wasn't good at lovin'
Thought I was good for nothin'
I never seem to let self-love in
Never, ever happy with who I am
Always living in the future, never present
Every heartbreak turned into a lesson
But now I ain't even gotta question nothin'
'Cause I'm my own biggest fan

You don't get to tell me who I am
You don't get to change any part of my plan
    I appreciate your opinion
But I don't need a fucking man to tell me
I am cool, I am funny
I am sweet like wild honey
I make love and I make money
    Yes I do

I'm down to earth, I am grateful
I am gentle like an angel
I am pretty and I am playful
    And that is true

Yeah, I know that I'm not the problem
But back then I was just trying to solve 'em
Yeah, my love's so magical but
I just gave it away to the wrong ones, yeah
I'ma take my dignity and go
'Cause baby if there's anything I know
I've worked too hard and I'm a work of art
And my beautiful heart don't deserve it, no
